Currency Shocks to Export Sales of Importers : A Heterogeneous Firms Model and Czech Micro Estimates
نویسنده
چکیده
To what extent can exporters cushion the impact of currency appreciation shocks by using imported intermediates? We apply a partial equilibrium model with heterogeneous firms. Producers can serve the domestic market, export final goods, or import inputs. In the model, an exogenous exchange rate shock simultaneously affects the variable costs and revenues associated with exports and imports. The impact of a hypothetical 1% appreciation of the domestic currency on sales is estimated using a panel of 7,356 Czech manufacturing firms observed from 2003 to 2006. We focus on the above period to exploit the rich within-firm variation in trade strategies. The variation is probably associated with the lifting of trade barriers due to Czech EU membership since 2004. For firms that both export and import, the model predicts a drop in total sales of 0.2%, a drop in export sales of 0.8%, and a rise in domestic sales of 0.2%. JEL Codes: C23, C26, D22, D24, F12.

Tariff Pass-through and Firm’s Productivity: A Case Study of Iran
T his paper investigates the heterogeneous reaction of Iranian exporters to the tariff rate changes, how export prices are influenced differently by the increase or decrease in foreign importers’ tariff rate. Using the Iranian transaction level export data and firm level data during the period 2002-2015, we find that tariff pass through for Iranian firms are incomplete and exporters ...

A standard assumption in the empirical literature is that exchange rate pass-through is both linear and symmetric. This implies that size (large-versus-small exchange rate changes) and direction (currency appreciations-versus-depreciations) have similar effects. In this paper these assumptions have investigated for Iran's export prices. So, this paper examines the asymmetric exchange rate pass-...
متن کاملEffect of Productivity on Export: New Evidence from Iranâs Manufacturing Industries
Based on the recent literature of heterogeneous firms, productive firms self select themselves into foreign markets. In this framework, there is a productivity rise prior to exporting. On the other words, different export performance across firms is linked to their heterogeneity. Â The main purpose of the present paper is to examine the so-called hypothesis of heterogeneous firm in Iran. For ...
متن کاملExporting and Firm Performance: Chinese Exporters and the Asian Financial Crisis
We ask how export demand shocks associated with the Asian financial crisis affected Chinese exporters. We construct firm-specific exchange rate shocks based on the precrisis destinations of firms’ exports. Because the shocks were unanticipated and large, they are a plausible instrument for identifying the impact of exporting on firm productivity and other outcomes. We find that firms whose expo...
متن کاملAn Agent Based Model Of Firms Selling And Sourcing International Decisions With Flexibility To Demand And Supply Shocks
The increasingly global fragmentation of production is a central topic of the international trade economics research agenda. The agent based model presented in this paper tries to combine in a unique coherent schema two usually distinct fields of internationalization analysis: from one side firms’ selling decisions (i.e., the choice to export or to invest directly abroad) and from the other sid...
